What Is Kiwanis

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time
. Kiwanis International was founded in 1915, with 8,400 Kiwanis Clubs in 96 countries. Kiwanis clubs, located in 80 nations, help their communities in countless ways. Each community’s needs are different—so each Kiwanis club is different. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child the chance to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed and thrive, great things happen. The national Kiwanis page can be found at http://www.kiwanis.org

Our Local Chapter

Our local Liberty Kiwanis Club was chartered in January 1954. While we are small in numbers, we are big in impact. We are a community service club that strives to improve the lives of children, both locally and internationally. Our Kiwanis club participates in several service projects each year. Recent major projects include:
  • Mom's Day Baby Shower- Collecting baby items for Liberty's needy babies, partnering with Hy-Vee and Love INC., on the Saturday before Mother's Day each year.
  • Adopt-A-Family- Helping to fill the needs of homeless and needy families during the holiday season.
  • Collecting food to stock local food pantries.
  • Raise funds and volunteer hours to help Hillcrest Transitional Housing to continue their fight against homelessness.
  • Conduct fundraisers to benefit the Liberty Kiwanis Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded to Liberty and Liberty North seniors that have shown a commitment to community service during their high school years. Some of our fundraisers include 'no-bake' sales among our club members, collecting and selling aluminum cans, candy bar sales, and sponsoring a pancake breakfast during the year.
  • Clean-up of the Liberty Westboro/Canterbury Greenway Trail that the club sponsors.
  • The Liberty Kiwanis Club sponsors 3 clubs for school-age children: Builders Club at Discovery Middle School and Key Clubs at Liberty and Liberty North High Schools. These clubs encourage community service for over 300 students each year, teaching the younger generation the value of service.
  • Members actively participate in the Kiwanis International goal to "Eliminate" Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) worldwide.
We are always looking for new members! For more info, stop by at one of our meetings or you can e-mail questions to Jim Major at libertymoarkkeyclubs@gmail.com or Tony Zahn at tony.zahn@att.net. Our club's direct email address is libertymoarkkiwanis@gmail.com.

Feel free to like our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/libertymokiwanis for updates about our club and projects.
